About

The organization was founded in 1964 to purchase, save and preserve the 1725 Miss Amelia Cottage. A large supermarket and parking lot had been planned for the site. We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit educational institution with an Absolute Charter from the New York State Board of Regents. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent permitted by law.

We are dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of the hamlet of Amagansett for the benefit of the local community, scholars and students, and the general public that visits the area. We collect and disseminate information that illustrates our agrarian past, the changes in domestic, social, and agricultural practice during the 19th century, and the transition to a resort economy.

The Association collects items of local provenance including carriages, furnishings, letters, and other items such as early photographs so that a record of the hamlet’s rural past will be preserved. The main focus is on the period from 1680 to 1925.

The 1.3 acre site currently contains the 1725 Miss Amelia Cottage, the c. 1850 Lester Barn, and the post-and-beam Richard S. Jackson Carriage House. The property is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

The Miss Amelia Cottage is open to the public as a museum, demonstrating how Amagansett people lived from the earliest Colonial times through to the beginning of the 20th century.
